Day 6: Cocktail of Emotion

Transcript of Christina’s Audio, as she struggles to find a place for the night:

Good evening, it’s monday 8th march, my mommy’s birthday so she looked over me all day long. My position is 83.1622 North and 77.4302 West. Today was one hell of a day, it was absolutely dreadful. So to sit down in my sleeping bag and see that I have actually made 5 km is an absolute pleasure. At about 3 O’Clock I didn’t even think I would find some place to sleep, it was just broken ice the size of three story buildings, and dragging my sled even one at a time was absolutely exhausting. I go through the day with a mixture and cocktail of emotion – fear, hunger, pain in various sizes. Today was particularly difficult, it made me very happy to know there were so many messages on the website, I can’t get them to respond to each and every one of them right now but I got a smattering of them from my mom and it was fabulous, it made my day after a very very difficult day. So I’m off to bed, even though I’m in a little area only about the size of half of a football pitch. Everything is moving around, I don’t suppose I’ll get much sleep but at least it’s what I call home for tonight. Good night and speak tomorrow.

I am in Italy, watching the snow fall (it’s true!) and thinking of you and your amazing perseverance. Hope your little bit of ice has seen you safely through the night xx

Cedriane de Boucaud says:

Christina – hearing your stories puts so much light on how difficult this is. – who would imagine all the difficulties – especially as all the pictures you get from up there are a bunch of politicians happily (and safely) watching beautiful cute bears and hugging seals and gloriously beautiful glaciers – obviously the environment is a lot tougher than what our PR world lets us see – on of those blocks moving can be treacherous. Thank you for making that more real for us through your messages. More importantly, please continue to be careful, one step at a time. With you to the end. Cedriane.

Cathy Dean says:

Hi Christina, and sorry that today was so tough. Doing it on your own must make the hard days harder. You prompted me to reread the MdS diaries and so much of the hunour in those came from the shared jokes with the team. Am sure today wull be a better one. Wishing you many miles in the right direction, xxCathy

Hi Chistina, I’m home from school.it’s 1:30 here. I live on a hilltop 50kms outside Rome and we’ve had the heaviest snowfall in years. We had to come home early and abandon the car and do 4kms uphill on foot. The wind chill factor is -7. Certainly made me think of you and how cozy this would feel to you! Hope you managed to get some sleep and today is easier.

I am introducing Dartmoor to the adventures of my intrepid friend Christina. We are huddled at the kitchen table over a whisky or 2 listening to your rather understated ! experiences and can only begin to imagine how precarious it must feel. You have all our admiration and we will be with you every step of the way, willing you to succeed.

Carolyn Swiney says:

You are an inspiration Christina. How can we complain about daily little irritations when you’re facing sleepless nights listening to the ice creak and crack!! Keep safe -

David Freeman says:
