The light at the end of the tunnel

After five days of intense preparations I am finally feeling ready. For the first time this morning the sun was out and the horizon clear even if the winds still blew at over 30 km/hr making the temperature feel like -51C. The sun beamed across our previously dull preparation room and we could look though our work with satisfaction.
I could not have been stranded with better people. Three of us are Italian and Tom, an Australian, has been adopted even though he keeps beating Luca, the photographer at arm wrestling. We have laughed enough to carry us though the months of loneliness ahead.
The camp has been empty of its usual hustle and bustle but we expect that to change between this evening and tomorrow morning when all the other groups are expected to arrive…. Just in time for my birthday party!
Thank you everyone for your birthday wishes. They fill me with joy and a desire to go and take it all on!
