Filefjell, Norway and loads of new kit to test

Short but bright days made the training trip a joy. -30 feels so good when the sun shines and the sunsets are a bouquet of firey pastels. But all did not start well…

We had not taken 100 paces that one of my ski poles broke in half. Luckily I had an aluminum tube in my repair kit and some sports tape and we managed to patch it together but it was a sign of how important it will be to have the right equipment and tools to deal with any breakages.

My lungs were still on fire and the cough that I had not been able to shift since new years only saw me panting behind Inge and stopping every half hour to catch my breath. I had hoped that with the enforced rest that my doctor had prescribed I would have been the back of this by now but hopefully the new course of antibiotics will clear that all up.

We tested new sleeping bags, tents, jackets, food, salopettes and a back pack that will serve as my harness. Some kit has passed and some failed miserably; a very light version of a tent was so small I felt as if I had been buried alive. My back pack/harness on the other hand was a real winner. So much of my strategy has changed this year and the most fundamental will be taking two sleds. This will enable me to shuttle my equipment over the really tough segments of ice rubble. While I leave one behind to fetch the other I will always want to have vital kit with me; my satellite phone, gun and GPS. Carrying them permanently in my pack will give me some needed reassurance.
